5 Tips to Get Hired for Light Industrial and Warehouse Jobs

Many different types of light industrial jobs exist. From food processing to automotive assembly, pursuing light industrial and warehouse jobs can lead to a career in almost any industry.

1. Show Your Experience

Even if you’ve never worked in a warehouse before, you’ll have gained transferable skills from past jobs you can apply to these roles. Demonstrate to potential employers how the work experience you have relates to the warehouse duties you’ll take on.

This will prove not only that you’re adaptable but also that you’re capable of handling a wide range of responsibilities.

2. Review Your Skills

Before applying to jobs, review your current work history and education. For example, managers look for certain qualities when hiring pickers and packers. How do your professional attributes align with those described in the role?

You may possess relevant knowledge because you previously worked in a warehouse as a picker or as a floor supervisor. However, your skills might only be indirectly related: For example, you may have worked as a merchandiser at a retail store and are familiar with ordering and placing products.

When applying, you can highlight how the skills you acquired as a merchandiser relate to those listed for light industrial and warehouse jobs.

3. Become Certified

Light industrial and warehouse jobs often require specialized qualifications. For example, if you’re applying to become a forklift operator, you’ll need a licence to use that equipment. Further, for safety purposes and to remain compliant with provincial work safety standards, employers expect candidates to have basic first aid certification.

Whether the job is to remodel cabinets or work as a production operator, each has its own unique set of educational requirements. If you see you’re missing some of the qualifications listed in the job description, begin researching how you can obtain the correct licences and certifications.

4. Do Your Research

It’s important potential applicants conduct basic company research for every job they apply to. See what you can learn about the company’s processes. How does this company’s light industrial and warehouse jobs contribute to its overall goals? How are its products made? What are the latest industry developments the company has implemented and who are its key personnel?

This information is useful in two ways: It will help you discover whether the company is the right fit for you and it also prepares you for an interview. It’s common practice for interviewers to ask candidates what they know about the business. When you’ve done your homework, it shows you’re thoughtful and prepared.
